pag50_zanahoriaMost of us who have a garden have flowers, cacti, ornamental trees …and maybe even palms. But what about using your garden not only as a place to relax, but also as a fountain of health? Have you ever thought about growing your own vegetables? The climate is good enough to harvest even more than once a year. Imagine making crispy salads with plants grown in your own plot of land.

Rocket salad, spinach, onions, tomatoes and garlic can grow in pots, although some might need special soil mixes. So, no need to be a “landowner”. Potatoes, carrots, runner beans, broccoli, cauliflower will need to be planted in the soil. Before planting, you may need to compost the soil to give it the necessary nutrients. Of course, those plants that can grow in pots will also do fine in soil. Avocado needs protection from the wind. And why not protect them in the summer from the bugs and the harsh sunshine by putting up a protective polythene cover? The materials can be purchased in ferreterias (DIY shops), fontanerias ( plumbers) and agricultural shops. It will keep the bugs out without spraying a lot of pesticides and it will create an ideal microclimate.
